Cold-case investigation into the 2021 Uranium Finance $50M exploit, reviving onchain leads that preceded criminal charges and a $31M recovery.
Uranium Finance, a Binance Smart Chain exchange, was exploited for $50 million in April 2021. For over two years the case sat cold; the exploiter laundered methodically, at one point pushing funds through, of all places, Magic: The Gathering card purchases.
The December 2023 investigation revived the trail, documenting where the laundering had leaked identifying information over the years. Old cases aren't dead cases onchain: every historical transaction remains available for analysis, and launderers only need to slip once across years of activity.
In 2025, a Maryland man was criminally charged with defrauding a crypto exchange of over $50 million in connection with the hacks, closing out one of DeFi's longest-standing unsolved exploits.
